Course description:
Human beings have always been curious about the uniquely human possession, human
language— about its structure, its diversity, its use and its effects on others. This course explores the
human capacity for language. We begin with the discussion of the uniqueness of human language and
then review major properties of language structure including morphology, syntax, semantics, phonetics
and phonology. We will also practice linguistic analysis through homework, in-class exercises, and
exams.

Punctuality is important. All students are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire period. If
you miss part of a class period, you will miss important information. If you do miss class time, make
sure you consult with another student in the class to find out what you missed.
Note: This class is not easy, and while many people earn “A” grades, some others do not pass.
The grade you receive will be the grade you earn, so start earning the grade you want or need now.

GROUP WORK. I will have you do some work in groups, both class discussions and some

accepted. Assignments must be turned in no later than the beginning of class on the day they are
