                                   Part of the NC AHEC Program
      Target Audience
      This workshop will be beneficial for psychologists, clinicians, therapists, counselors, social workers, marriage
      and family therapists, psychiatric nurses, and substance abuse counselors. Other interested mental health
      professionals are invited to attend.
      Program Description
      Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), is an empirically supported treatment for suicide and for borderline
      personality disorder (BPD). DBT is based on a skills deficit model that views dysfunctional behavior as either a
      consequence of lacking skills to solve problems or a maladaptive approach to problem solving. Consequently,
      DBT includes more than 60 concrete skills translated from behavioral research and other evidence-based
      treatments that are grouped into four modules: (a) mindfulness skills, which emphasize observing, describing,
      and participating in the present moment effectively and without judgment; (b) emotion regulation skills,
      including strategies for changing emotions and for changing the tendency to respond emotionally; (c)
      interpersonal effectiveness skills, ranging from social skills to assertiveness and interpersonal problem solving;
      and (d) distress tolerance skills, including strategies to control impulsive actions and to radically accept difficult
      life events. Evidence suggests that these skills alone are effective in reducing psychopathology in a variety of
      populations including suicidal adolescents, adults with ADHD, individuals with depression and anxiety, and
      individuals with eating disorders and substance use disorders. This workshop will present all the DBT skills
      focusing on the changes in the new DBT Skills Training Manual (released in November), as well as information
      on how to teach and help your clients apply these skills in common clinical situations.
      Objectives
      Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
      • Explain familiarity with the applications of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills and the research findings
        supporting the application of the treatment;
      • Identify mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance skills;
      • Summarize adapting teaching and examples of DBT skills to different clinical presentations or clinical settings;
      • Review the updates to the skills that are included in the upcoming skills training manual;
      • Describe the core DBT strategies and their application within the framework of skills training; and
      • Discuss the introduction to skills coaching and how to best do it over the phone.

   Speaker
   Andrada D. Neacsiu, PhD, is an assistant professor at Duke University Medical Center with a primary interest
   in outpatient interventions for difficulties managing emotional experiences that interfere with well-being. As
   a clinician, she specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for
   adults who report a variety of mental health problems, including personality, mood, anxiety, eating, trauma,
   stress-related, adjustment, and impulse control disorders. Her approach to psychotherapy includes working
   collaboratively with her patients to identify their unique life and therapy goals, as well as implementing
   evidence-based interventions in order to achieve their identified goals. As an educator, she trains clinicians
   nationally and internationally and teaches Duke graduate students, psychology and psychiatry residents in
   how to effectively apply CBT and DBT in their clinical work. As a researcher, her focus is on psychotherapy
   optimization and neuroscience-informed treatment development for emotion dysregulation. Her research
   keeps her up- to- date with the latest evidence-based approaches to use in her clinical work, and her work with
   patients strongly influences the research that she does.
