RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO SPEAK WELL
For as long as we can remember, there been people who have struggled with their speech, people like
Moses, people like DeMatha knees where you may or may not have heard of and who I'm going to tell you
about in just a couple of minutes. My name is Michael Williams and I want you to know that if you've
been struggling with your speech, if you stutter or stammer or speak too fast or have fear of public
speaking, you're not alone. The people have struggled with this for centuries, for millennia. What I'm
going to do in this very, very powerful series is I am willing to show you how you can retrain your brain to
speak well, how you can retrain your brain to speak well, and I want to be sharing with you some of the
neuro science behind this just enough so that we can understand what's going on. And this is just not
theory or this is just not someone coming up with something o the top of your head.
There's a lot of research behind how you and I can retrain our brains to do many things. So why don't we
just go ahead and jump in and I want to just tell you a story. Just a brief story about a guy named DeMoss,
the knees, the Mostyn knees was around in the the 300 VCs in the 303 80 something like that. And
growing up he grew up in a relatively wealthy family and his father passed away unfortunately and left
him fairly well o , but his guardians took advantage of them and took all of his mind. And so growing up
he struggled with his species stuttered. I spoke just terribly. In fact, some people said, you know, you speak
worse than sailors and apparently back then sales are just terrible speakers. They probably cursed or just
right So what ended up happening is they said, man, you're just a terrible speaker.
And so the master knees set out to begin to work on his speech. In fact, he left his school studies and
started to work on becoming a public speaker and he just used to do so bad. People would tease them and
give them names. In fact, one of the names they gave him a became a technical name that lasted for many
years, that they would label that they would use the label people who started, well, this is what happened.
Upon one occasion, the mosque Denise was, was speaking at and struggling, and he came across a guy
named sat Tierras and sad terrace was an actor. And so, so Tyrus became like his rst speech coach, and I
said, this is what I want you to do. Demosthenes I want you to begin working on your speech. I want you
to practice modeling or mimicry, like mimicking someone else.

RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO SPEAK WELL
I want you to study speeches to see how other people speak, and I want you to pick these species apart. I
want you to practice them over and over until you get it right. Now, the other thing that the Moss needs
that because his body may have been a little and breathing was a week, is he would actually put pebbles in
his mouth. You've probably heard about this, right Well, this is where this comes from, comes from the
story of the Mastani is I call this the Demosthenes approach. So he put pebbles in his mouth and then he
would recite speeches. He would also run up and down high places, Hills and so forth to build up his lung
capacity. So he would run while reciting things. Okay. So he put pebbles in his mouth to help with this
articulation. And then he would run while reciting to help with his breathing.
And what he also did is he shut himself in his basement, shaved his head or shave part of his hair and just
practice. And the reason he did that is he said, I'm going to do this until I master this oratory thing until I
become a master oratory. So he shapes it. Wednesday is just practice, practice, practice. Until he became
one of the greatest orators of all times. Now some people say he never really cured his star, and because of
you would want to have a conversation with them, he would, say, you know, wait a minute, let me prepare
rst. Right But one of the things that is very, very clear throughout history is that he was one of the
greatest speakers of all times as the master speaker. And so why does this matter Why is this important to
you It's important because of this, no matter how bad you struggle with your speech and better how
severe, how acute your stuttering is, there is something you can do about it, right

RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO SPEAK WELL
There are some things you can do about it. So I want to get down to a little bit of the science, the neuro
science on why this is true. If you've ever watched any of my other videos, then you have heard me talk
about this idea of creating a new speaking style and replacing your speech and so forth and so on. And so I
want to break this down a little bit. You have the capacity, you have the ability, we all do, right The ability
to acquire new skills. So I want to just jot this down because these are very, very important points that I
want us to remember. You have the ability to acquire new skills. You have the ability to form new. What
For those of you that might know habits, you can acquire new skills and you can form new habits. Now,
here's something that's absolutely true and you cannot deny this, that speaking what I'm doing right now,
what you do when you converse with people, when you introduce yourself, when you give presentations,
you answer the phone.
What do you do when you speak is in part a skill. It is a skill. It is something that can be what learned. It
can be practiced and I can be learned. Speaking is a skill. You can learn new languages, right You can learn
to speak better, and speaking is also a habit, right There are certain things that we habitually do, so
sometimes we use ller words or we use AHS or ums, and we do. Many, many things have bitterly. In fact, a
lot of the things that we do each day, tying our shoes, brushing our teeth, driving the work, our habits, and
a part of the reason for this is because our brain desires to push things into the habit. Center desires to
make things habit, make things habitual automatic. So it doesn't have to consciously think about them,
right It wants to use our conscious processing power for more higher order things for analyzing and so
forth.
