Executive Summary
This action plan has been prepared by Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd for the 2010/2015
period in accordance with its obligations as a Signatory of the Australian Packaging
Covenant (APC).
The Dardalis family founded Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd in 1963, and over the years
has developed into the largest manufacturer of Spring Rolls and Dim Sims in Australia,
currently employing some 80 staff.
Whilst delivering its products to the Australian market, Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd,
also holds an Export licence, and is certified with BRC (incorporating HACCP).
Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd packages products under the brands of Marathon,
Marathon – Chef Direct, Hong Kong Gold, Hong Kong Chef, Fonwing and Rombotis.
The long established food safety practices and quality assurance systems (which are
independently audited) ensure that Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd continually meets all
food safety requirements.
This Action Plan provides details of actions to be undertaken by Marathon Food Industries
P/L over the period of the plan to reduce the environmental impacts of consumer
packaging.

Key Achievements under the previous NPC
Some of the key achievements and packaging improvements that have been implemented
or identified by Marathon Food Industries Pty Ltd include:-
- Reduction in the volume of Food Trays utilised in our finished retail product into the
market place, therefore our reliance on PET has reduced.
- Negotiated with some suppliers to return outer cartons to enable multiple re-use of
these cartons.
- Separation of recyclable materials from non recyclables.
- Staff education regarding the importance of recycling
- Incorporated a buy recycled (where appropriate) purchasing policy/practice into
Marathon Food Industries P/L Quality Management System.

Process Description
Dim Sims
Marathon Foods has three main areas that produce the three lines of products. The Dim Sim area
consists of 16 formers where dough is combined with the fill. The process begins with the Fill mix
made up in a separate room.
The dough is also made up in the pastry room where production is at peak 70 batches of dough are
made.
Spring Rolls
The Batter and the fill are combined in the spring roll area. The fill is made up in a separate room
and then coated with the batter in the spring roll formers.
Approx. 10 batches of spring rolls are produced per day..
Finger Food
Marathon also produces a range of fine finger in variable quantities in a dedicated area. Production
depends on demand and minimal water is required in this area.
