What is Leadership? This handout is designed to accompany “Leadership Module 2: Enhancing Youth Leadership” online training powerpoint. Please have the Step Up to Leadership Mentor Guide for Grades 6-12 available or print off the following handouts. • “Assess Myself” (pp. 18-19) • “Talent Search” (pp. 34-35) • “Fostering Youth Leadership Development” (p.10) We encourage you to review all the Step Up to Leadership Project Manuals while taking this training. Information on how to purchase these publications is in the online training. Activity 1: What is Leadership? 1. Think about people who have influenced your life. Write in the box below a list of their leadership traits. 2. Think about how your members would answer this question: Who would you choose as a person who has influenced you and what traits do they have? What responses do you think they would have? In what way would a young person’s responses be different than yours? Write down your thoughts. You can test your thoughts by asking young people in your club this question the next time you meet with them. Spring 2008 1 Activity 2: Leadership Traits “Leadership is the ability to influence and support others in a positive manner for a common goal.” • It can be learned. • Everyone has leadership potential. • Everyone can make a difference. 1. Using the list of leadership traits you generated earlier, place them in one of the four leadership practices in this chart. Categories of Youth Leadership Relationship Building (trust, responsibility, empathy) Communication (active listening, offering ideas, asking questions) Planning and Organizing (develop and carry out a goal, teamwork) Group Process (knowing strategies to handle conflict, getting ideas of the group) Activity 3: Great Leaders 1. Using the 4 leadership categories of youth to guide you, write two or three sentences about what great leaders do to influence and support others in a positive manner for a common goal. Spring 2008 2 Activity 4: Talent Search 1. In the chart list five club members and the leadership skills or talents they possess. Next, identify the leadership category these skills fit in Column 3. You may or may not have someone listed for each of the four categories. This may give you an opportunity to identify other members in your club who have these skills. Name of Member Skill or Talent Identify Category of Talent (Relationship, communication, planning, or group process) Activity 5: Club Meetings 1. In the first column of the chart below, list tasks needed to make the club run smoothly.
