Feedback Tutorial Letter
Assignment 1,
BEL7112S
S1, 2018
Dear Student,
With feedback on your assignment I will mention the following points:
What can be observed from the start is that some of you did not acknowledge sources
although that you used it, actually most of you did not acknowledge any source and
some of you only did at the end of the assignment questions. In general I think most of
you did a lot of input in completing these assignments, and that makes me realise that
you really take your studies seriously.
You will also find with your assignments the marking schemes that were used to mark
the assignments. These mark schemes also gave you an overview of what has been
looked at in the assignments you needed to elaborate on these meaning you had to
discuss these.
Although I think you get this lecture over and over I still think as a student should by
now be conscious about spelling. You are making unnecessary spelling mistakes. It can
even be rectified by using the spell checker if you typed your assignment. If you also
read more you will be more conscious about spelling mistakes. The same goes for the
use of grammar which include paragraphs. It makes it very difficult if your sentences are
too long because this result in your arguments becoming off the point. You also wrote
long paragraphs not indicating where one argument stopped and where the other one
started.
We will look at the mark schemes and what the most appropriate answers should have
been.

Please read the article in your reader on page 239 titled “Transformational leadership
and team performance” by Dionne et al (20014) and answer the following question:
1. Discuss the three team processes with proven conceptual and empirical links to
team performance and leadership.
[15]
Cohesion
Tend to have less absenteeism
Have high involvement in team activities
Have high levels of member coordination during team tasks
Have higher levels of satisfaction, productivity and member interactions
Are better motivated
Communication
Increased listening
Openness to suggestions
Prompt, relevant feedback
Generally open communication
Conflict management

Beneficial if alternative points of view are listed
Benefits realised if conflict is managed correctly
Please read the articles by Oshagbemi & Gill (2003) p. 179 and Schyns and Sanders
(2005) p. 256 and answer the following question:
2. Discuss the difference in leadership between men and women.
[15]
A significant relationship was found between self-rated transformational
leadership and occupational self-efficacy for men, but not for women.
Men tend to delegate more than women. In leadership behaviour, men and
women leaders differ significantly only in inspirational motivation
Men and women leaders are rated the same by followers with regard to the
interaction between leaders’ occupational self-efficacy and transformational
leadership
There are no statistical differences between the consultative and participative
leadership styles of men and women.
One should consider men for leadership roles that require an autocratic
leadership style and women for roles that require a participative leadership
style.
Please read the article by Rucinski et al (2006) p. 217 and answer the following
question:
3
3. Describe the forms of ethics that Rucinski discuss in the article.
[20]
In western society the rights of the individual are very highly regarded.
In socialistic societies and in African context the community are often more
important.
Ethic of critique is awakening us to the inequities found in society, it raises
questions about laws
Ethic of critique questions bureaucratic power structures and how individuals
are treated.
The theme of critique forces leaders to confront the moral issues of the day
The ethic of care has its goal the well-being of other persons.
Caring has to do with relationships and takes place in a community.
The ethic of care is related to the ethic of justice
Ethic of care is altruistic
Overall I am satisfied with the marks obtained and hope this will be the same for the
next assignment.
Regards,
Ferrand van Wyk
