Mrs. Shockey’s
Introduction to Calculus
tlw15@scasd.org
This course is designed for those students who have successfully
completed precalculus or advanced precalculus. The skills taught in this
course will prepare you for your college math requirements next year.
However, we will NOT be preparing you to take the AP test in the spring.
Topics Covered:
➢Functions, Data Analysis, and Mathematical Modeling (review of
linear and exponential functions in context)
➢ Limits and Continuity
➢Derivatives
➢Anti-derivatives and Differential Equations
➢Integrals
Materials Needed:
✓ Textbook – Hughes-Hallett: Applied Calculus, Second Edition. I
also have the book available electronically via Scoodle.
✓ Chapter Packet – This will be supplied by me. It will include your
section notes and practice worksheets
✓ Calculator – You will be assigned your own TI graphing calculator.
You are asked to supply your own batteries when needed and return
this same calculator, in good condition, to me at the end of the
school year.
✓ Chromebook - You will need your Chromebook to access the
electronic textbook, course calendar on Canvas, and Khan
Academy.
HELP:
➢If you are wasting class time, I will NOT offer you additional help
outside of class. Make the most of our scheduled time together.
➢ If you need it, don’t be afraid to ask for it! If we do not share any
common free time outside of class, I can point you in the right
direction.
I follow the ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY as found in the student
handbook.
Grading Policies
➢ Homework Quizzes – 10% - Homework practice sets are designed to give
you practice applying the skills that were introduced during each lesson.
These practice sets will include problems from the textbook, handouts,
and Khan Academy assignments. Working through the selected problems
is for your benefit! Assigned practice sets will NOT be checked for
completion points. Instead, you will have quizzes that contain problems
from the assigned homework practice. These quizzes will be announced,
but can not be retaken. This is your opportunity to demonstrate that you’ve
been doing the homework and that you understand the daily material. So,
take the homework problems seriously, check the accuracy of your work,
and ask questions in class when I ask you if you have any.
➢ Teamwork/Classwork – 15% - During each chapter, you will have the
opportunity to work on a set of graded problems with fellow classmates.
These teamwork exercises are an excellent learning tool and usually
result in good grades.
➢ Assessments – 75% - Prior to every quiz and test, you will be given a
practice quiz/test, which will serve as an excellent study guide. Keys to
these will always be made available to you on Scoodle.
Important Notes on Absences
o If you miss class because of a field trip or other planned trip, it is YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY to get the work that you will miss AHEAD OF TIME.
o Everything that you need is on Canvas. You are expected to be resourceful.
It’s an important life skill! In the event of any absence, please check the
Canvas calendar to see what you missed and try your best to keep on top of
your work.
o If you miss an in-class, graded activity, you will make it up in class during
the next class period that you are present. It is important that you stay on top
of your work and also that I can give everyone timely feedback.
o If you are absent during the class prior to a scheduled test or quiz, it is
expected that you will take the test or quiz as scheduled. You didn’t miss any
instruction on new material. All review materials are accessible in your
packets and keys are on Canvas. You are expected to be able to prepare
yourself outside of class. If you are feeling unprepared, you MUST contact
me BEFORE the day of the test or quiz to either get help or speak about an
appropriate time to get the help that you need. PLAN AHEAD! You must
show effort and preparation in order to earn extra preparation time.
o If you miss a test or quiz, you have one week (five school days) to make it up.
Your grade on the assessment will be lowered by 10% for each class day
beyond the five-day window that you do not take it. It is in your best interest
to make up work in a timely manner. There is a VERY strong correlation
between timeliness and grades.
