                        Syllabus changes in
               Cambridge IGCSE™ Chemistry (0620)
       Dear Teacher
       As you may be aware, Cambridge International has updated the Cambridge IGCSE™ Chemistry syllabus (0620), 
       with first examinations taking place in 2023. We have updated our resources to fully support you in teaching the revised
       syllabus and are working with Cambridge International to gain endorsement for this forthcoming series.
       Please visit www.cambridgeinternational.org for information about the current syllabuses and full details of the changes.
       The revised syllabus is now organised into the following twelve main sections:
                                      7. Acids, bases and salts
       1. States of matter
                                      8. The Periodic Table
       2. Atoms, elements and compounds
                                      9. Metals
       3. Stoichiometry
                                      10. Chemistry of the environment
       4. Electrochemistry
                                      11. Organic chemistry
       5. Chemical energetics
                                      12. Experimental techniques and chemical analysis
       6. Chemical reactions
        
       Updates to the syllabus:
          New chapter covering, 'Chemistry and the environment’
          The effects of temperature and pressure on gases
          A new chapter pulling together the experimental skills and techniques
        
       Topics no longer covered:
          Weak bases
          Thermal decomposition of hydroxides, carbonates and nitrates
          Extraction of zinc
          Control of soil acidity
          Sulfur, sulfur dioxide properties of concentrated sulfuric acid
          Inorganic carbon chemistry including manufacture of lime and cement, and chemistry of carbon dioxide 
          Organic chemistry associated with natural macromolecules, fats and carbohydrates
        
       In terms of assessment, the 2023 examinations will take the following format:
          Paper 1/2 MCQ: 45 mins 30%
          Paper 3/4 Theory: 75 mins 50%
          Paper 5 PT: 75 mins OR Paper 6 1 hr 20%
        
       The new edition will support these changes by providing:
          A revision checklist at the end of each chapter
          New Practical Skills sections in each chapter
          Key definitions are identified throughout
          Worked examples, where necessary, to help the student answer the in chapter and end of chapter questions and
          ultimately the final exam-style questions at the end of the text
