EDS 4633 Methods of Teaching Mathematics
Credit Hours: Three (3) credit hours
Type of Course: B = Lecture, field-based
Catalogue Description: Three-hour lecture, field-based. Aims and purposes of teaching
mathematics in secondary school, curriculum problems, organization and presentation of
subject matter, methods of teaching and evaluation.

Course Objectives
The students will:
1. Examine the goals and objectives of secondary mathematics programs based on state,
national, and common core standards. INTASC #9 & #7; CFPO 1, 3
2. Prepare effective plans for units of work for a day, week, semester or year. INTASC #7;
CFPO 2, 4, 8, 10
3. Explain the purposes of the three general types of activities in a teaching unit and specific
materials and/or activities which can be used to accomplish these purposes. INTASC #4, 5,
7; CFPO 8, 10
4. Explain the purposes of evaluation and methods of evaluating pupil progress, materials,
activities, and self. INTASC #6 & #7; CFPO 2, 4, 8; CRT 13.1
5. Write a teaching unit in mathematics at any grade level, 7-12, for a specific known class.

10. Discuss causes mathematics anxiety and how to reduce it in the secondary mathematics

This course requires a subscription to Watermark, an online portfolio used for course
assignments and assessment purposes. Assignments required in Watermark must be submitted
for successful completion of the course. If you do not have a subscription, please call the OCFBI
office to obtain a key code.
Description of Instruction: Lecture, field-based. Instructional methods will include lecture,
discussion, demonstrations, presentations, hands-on-activities, and projects. All students are
responsible for material assigned. They will work together and individually to accomplish
assigned tasks.

Technology
Technology will be used in both the delivery of the course content and through course
requirements. Delivery of course content may use lectures, PowerPoint presentations, Canvas,
and available technologies. All course assignments will be completed using appropriate
software. Students are responsible for having a computer with Internet access capabilities and
word processing software, such as Microsoft Word.

exploration of a different culture, students will gain an appreciation of the value of
diverse student populations.

Field Component
This course has a field experience requirement. The purpose of this experience is to
provide students with opportunities to teach under the guidance of a mentor
teacher, plan and implement lessons, and engage in reflective practice. Students

will be assigned placements in middle and/or high school classrooms and must
document 50 hours of placement time, plan an instructional unit, and teach at least
three full-length lessons. Additionally, students will submit items to assess their
field experiences including an introductory letter to parents, a reflection of lessons
taught, and a completed log of teaching experiences.

Assignments submitted late will receive a 10% deduction if submitted by the following class
meeting. No assignments will be accepted after the next class meeting.

90.00 – 100.00% = A
80.00-89.99% = B
70.00-79.99% = C
60.00-69.99% = D
below 60.00% = F
Attendance Policy
Class attendance is required for every class meeting unless documentation of illness of
university-related absence is provided. Each class meeting missed will result in a 2% deduction
of from the course grade, providing a maximum deduction of ten percentage points (one letter
grade.) Assignments missed due to unexcused absences may not be made up.
