ABSTRACT
This collection of lesson plans helps social studies
teachers and teacher educators implement the various national and state
standards in their classrooms. The collection illustrates how classroom
implementation can be achieved through the application of the powerful
teaching and learning principles devised by National Council for the Social
-Studies (NCSS). Following an introduction, "The Social Studies Standards
Movement and Powerful Teaching: From Congress to the Classroom" (William W.
Wilen), the collection consists of 13 lesson plans covering all 10 thematic
strands of the NCSS Curriculum Standards for Social Studies: "Images of the
West" (Peggy Altoff; Sari Bennett) (Middle School/High School); "Trade Routes
in the Old Northwest--1790-1850" (Cameron Buckland) (Eleventh Grade);
"Surveying Japanese Students: Comparing Students from Different Cultures"
(William P. Fitzhugh) (Grades 3-5); "The Culture of Native Americans" (Larry
Fontanarosa) (Eighth Grade); "Constantine Village Cemetery--A Bridge to
Today" (Elvin W. Keith III) (Eleventh Grade); "Unions and Collective
Bargaining" (Mike Koren) (Sixth Grade); "Transportation on the Move" (Paula
Ann Mulford) (First Grade); "Glidden's Patent Application for Barbed Wire"
(Emily Ray; Wynell Schamel) (Middle School/High School); "Two Tickets to
Freedom" (Patricia King Robeson) (Fifth Grade); "Prejudice and Values"
(Walter F. Urbanek) (Ninth Grade); "Simulation on Ethical and Moral Citizen
Responsibilities" (Helen 0. Willey) (High School); "Uncovering Pompeii:
Examining Evidence" (Michael M. Yell) (Middle School); and "Global
Reflections in Economic Decision Making" (Suzanne C. Zaremba) (Third Grade).
